With about 36,605 water meters installed in Chatham-Kent residences the Public Utilities Commission is working on a plan to replace the older ones.
General Manager Tim Sunderland says meters lose accuracy as they age.
"Those water meters vary in age and the older a meter gets the less accurate it is," he says, adding the loss of accuracy is costing the PUC sales.
He says higher tech meters could eliminate the need for meter readers and could provide more information on the system.
"Depending on the technology that we look at we could get readings every ten minutes ," he says. "At that point you can identify what you are pumping out of the plant based on what consumers are taking and identify leaks."
Sunderland says there is an MOE requirement to track leaks and that is very difficult with the technology in use now.
