The president of the Windsor-Essex Active Retirement Initiative says the number of retirees settling in Windsor-Essex has fallen dramatically over the past few years.
Krista Del Gatto blames a drop in funding for marketing.
"We didn't have the advertising dollars to market as much as in the previous years so you can definitely see a drop," she says.
That drop is about 40%.
Del Gatto made an appeal to Essex County Council for $80,000, much of it for advertising. Windsor City Council will hear a similar presentation. If they come on board, Del Gatto wants to hold a strategic meeting with county and city officials and hopefully, expand efforts.
"We're not hitting big city markets like Calgary and Edmonton," she says. "We've done some ads, but the amount that we should be getting out to them, we're nowhere near."
Del Gatto says 1,200 families have relocated in Windsor-Essex since the initiative started in 2008.
