Students with asthma in Chatham-Kent's Catholic school board will soon be allowed to carry their own inhalers.
Children will be given this right with their parents' permission, after the board recently changed its health policy. Superintendent Deb Crawford says this provides flexibility if families are more comfortable with children holding onto their puffers.
"It's to make sure the procedures are responsive to the student's individual needs. It's a very collaborative approach where we try to wrap ourselves around the child and always act in their best interest."
The change stems from the provincial government passing Sabrina's Law and Ryan's Law, and also covers anaphylaxis. The board is also creating school plan for how to better support children with diabetes.
