Public School Extracurriculars to End Wednesday

The head of the Lambton-Kent-District School Board is expressing disappointment that public elementary teachers are poised to withdraw all voluntary extracurricular activities as of next Wednesday.

Jim Costello says students will be impacted.

The Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario is stepping up the pressure on the province to return to contract talks but so far haven't acted on a threat to begin rotating one-day strikes this month.

The government has reached deals with the other major teachers' unions and Education Minister Liz Sandals said yesterday it's been available to bargain and is ready to go back to the table.

Local ETFO President Ron Rivait says attempts to return to bargaining are being ignored.

The union also says an offer to refer one issue to binding arbitration has been ignored.
