Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services says the fire broke out around 9:30pm at an abandoned small farm house on Stewart Line. The building was in very poor structural condition.
Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control and stop and exposure to surrounding vegetation.
There were no injuries reported and the fire is not believed to be suspicious.
Alan Smith will begin his new role with the municipality on July 20.
