Hydro Rate Increase Expected: Wynne (GALLERY)

An increase in hydro rates set to take affect November 1 is part of the Liberal government's long term energy plan, according to Premier Kathleen Wynne.

The increase is different for different times of the day, but it equates to an average daily increase of 5%.

Speaking at Highbury Canco in Leamington, Wynne says her government is working to increase capacity to help area industries.

"I know that in terms of the capacity that is needed for greenhouse, there is a challenge there," she says. "That's something that is a very live discussion with out Ministry of Energy."

The Ontario Energy Board recently approved a new transformer station for Leamington, however Hydro One doesn't plan to build it for several years. For the average greenhouse, the rate increase equates to roughly $1,000 more per year per acre on their electricity bill.

Wynne spoke following a tour of Highbury Canco in Leamington. The company has been awarded a total of $2.5-million in grants to help expand the business.

She is also speaking today at the 58th Annual Convention of the Provincial Building and Construction Trades Council of Ontario in Windsor.
