The Supreme Court of Canada will hear a case next week which could set a new precedent for the way horse doping infractions are handled.
Former Windsor horse trainer Derek Reisberry was charged criminally in 2010 for purposely impacting the outcome of a race when he was allegedly caught injecting a substance into a horse at Windsor Raceway.
Ontario Harness Horse Association General Manager Brian Tropea says it could have far reaching impacts in the industry. He says horses, like people, get sick and sometimes need medication.
"If for whatever reason one of those medications doesn't clear the horses system and ends up in the post-race urine analysis, you could be charged criminally with trying to affect the outcome of a race."
Tropea says there are already penalties imposed by the Ontario Racing Commission which can kick a person out of the industry for doping infractions.
The supreme court will hear the case October 13th.
