Opposing the Trans Pacific Partnership is top of mind for NDP Leader Tom Mulcair this weekend.
As Prime Minister Stephen Harper continues negotiations with 11 other leaders to reach an economic and development agreement across the Pacific Ocean, Mulcair is making it clear his party would not feel tied down to the partnership if elected. He claims the deal could mean lost jobs and business for Canadian farmers.
Mulcair adds dairy famers could particularly be at risk.
"Supply management is a way to ensure families can have a decent living running those operations, and it's also fair to consumers," he says.
Expanding on supply management, Mulcair says its a system that has worked for Canada in the past.
"It's a system that has proved very fair to farmers and the consumers," he says. "Mr. Harper has an ideological approach that has put that at risk, and we're going to stand up and fight."
Mulcair was in the Town of Essex for a rally with NDP candidate Tracey Ramsay Sunday night.
