Lakeshore Warning About Coyotes

A Lakeshore town councillor tells residents to call the Ontario Provincial Police if they see a coyote in their neighbourhood.

Steve Wilder says they're becoming a more common sight, especially in St.Clair Shores Park and the Amy Croft neighbourhood.

"They've seen them in their backyards, running across the street," he says. "Residents are telling me it's not just one coyote. They're not seeing two, and in some cases, they think they may have seen a third. When they do start to get that pack mentality, that is where I start to get concerned."

He says there's often multiple sightings in one week.

While some residents have told him they don't want to bother the police with a call that's not really crime related, Wilder says they don't mind.

"Contacting the OPP on a more frequent basis can lead to an alteration of their patrol routes and the frequency with which they do patrol certain areas."

So far, Wilder says there have been no humans hurt and no reports of injured pets.

He says the town is considering its options for controlling the population.
