Crown Shutting Down

The warning signs may have been there, but Crown Metal Packaging is just now confirming that it will be ceasing production this fall.

The move will put 30-40 people out of work at the plant on Irwin St. in Chatham.

Chatham-Kent's Deputy Director of Economic Development Stuart McFadden says they've had the company on their radar for a while.

"They haven't been as busy, they've been at one shift now for a couple of years -- we have tried to reach out and offer support," says McFadden. "It did have something to say in the letter that it had nothing to do with the employees or the quality of work, it was just the competitive nature of the market."

McFadden says the company is expected to shut down operations at the facility on or before October 2, 2015, but will likely continue to use the building as a warehouse.

Crown Metal Packaging used to supply cans for Leamington's Heinz plant before it was sold in 2013.
