OB Saved, But Still Not Funded

The Erie St. Clair Local Health Integration network decided in June to keep Leamington's obstetrics department open, but there is still no plan to fund it.

Leamington District Memorial Hospital CEO Terry Shields says health care funding works two years ahead, so they know cash will be coming. But, the problem according to Shields, is the gap between then and now.

Hospital officials met with the LHIN on the issue earlier this week. "We talked about the pressures we have both from a human resources perspective and a financial perspective. The LHIN is working with the ministry of health to address those concerns."

Shields says they need $1.5-million in funding each of the next two years to be able to staff the hospital properly.

He says without that amount of transitional cash, services in other parts of the hospital will need to be impacted to make up the difference.
