Fiber Optics To Boost Leamington Economy

Faster internet speeds in Leamington could soon help local businesses thrive.

Mayor John Paterson says the town's agreed to have Southshore Broadcasting come in over the next few weeks to plan out where it'll lay its main fiber optic lines, which could be in use within two to three months. "Our green house industry, our medical facilities, several of our higher-tech offices, manufacturers specifically, are all looking for higher (internet) speeds so that they can move larger files."

Paterson believes a fibre optic network will open the municipality up to more development, whether its residential or commercial-industrial.

He adds that not everyone will have access to the main lines right away, but it's a start.

Essex County Council is currently working with the provincial government to secure fiber optic connections for all rural areas.
