Leamington District Memorial Hospital is the only place locally offering a new type of mammography.
Senior Director of Corporate Services Rose Costa says the new system is called tomosynthesis, and is an add-on to the new $400,000 mammography suite in Leamington's women's health centre. "The actual camera rotates around the breast and can take multiple images while it's moving. Those images are then combined to create a 3d image."
While not in use much in Canada, Costa says it's widely available in the U.S. and Europe.
But she says the new machine won't be used for all patients, only the ones with the breast type that can benefit most from it.
