Fire crews from Merlin, Raleigh North and Tilbury responded to the call shortly before 11:30pm.
The the house was fully engulfed when crews arrived and they fought the blaze for a number of hours.
No one was inside the home at the time, and there were no injuries. The cause so far has not been determined and damage is estimated at $120,000.
Alan Smith will begin his new role with the municipality on July 20.
