Overnight Storm Spawns Possible Tornado

Environment Canada is trying to determine if an overnight storm possibly produced a tornado.

Meteorologist Geoff Coulson says wind gusts at Windsor Airport peaked at 78 km/h around 2am, and at the Chatham-Kent Municipal Airport at 96 km/h at 3am.

"That seems to be the main damaging aspect of these storms, that they were firing off these bursts of very strong winds," says Coulson. "And we are right now just sort of cataloguing a number of sporadic reports of damage, some trees down in some areas, some power lines down in others, and barn damage in some other areas."

At this point, Coulson says Kingsville and Lakeshore appear to be the hardest hit areas. The damage isn't enough to send investigators to explore the possibility of a significant weather event, but Coulson says that could change if they receive enough detailed accounts and photos to suggest the possibility of a tornado.
