Helping Earthquake Victims

Ridgetown native Heather Geluk is safely out of Nepal after helping out with relief efforts following April's deadly earthquakes.

Geluk was in the country for a climbing expedition, but after the quake her stay in the country changed over to a humanitarian mission.

"When they said they needed help distributing temporary shelter, food relief, and basically anything to victims of the earthquakes, it was basically a no-brainer to go, 'yeah I'll help with that,'" says Geluk.

While the initial earthquake did the most damage, smaller quakes are still rocking the country.

"We've had over 270 aftershocks since the 25th of April," says Geluk. "By aftershock I mean anything above a magnitude of 4 -- so anything that in a building you would be able to feel quite significantly."

Geluk says she'll be in Ridgetown this week spending some time with her family.
