The Chatham-Kent Public Utilities Commission is taking steps to better track the water that's flowing through your tap.
PUC General Manager Tom Kissner says just under half of the water meters in the municipality need to be replaced.
"Over time they don't capture all the water that flows through the meter," says Kissner, adding they'll be considering a variety of options for the new meters. "There's technology out there where you can do drive-by meter reads via radio signals and there's other technology where the reads are automatically pushed to a centralized point."
Kissner says depending on which strategy is deployed, there could be some savings because it costs money to have someone going around, walking house to house, to capture the meter readings.
The replacement program is still in the very early stages and wouldn't likely be implemented until late this year or early next year.
