Two female migrant workers who dealt with workplace discrimination in Wheatley have been awarded $220,000.
The Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario issued the ruling Wednesday against Presteve Foods and former owner Jose Pratas after a lengthy process.
Justicia for Migrant Workers organizer Chris Ramsaroop says yesterday's ruling sends a clear message. "This is not simply an exception, this is a systemic issue that we want addressed," he says. "This is an atrocious, deplorable situation, but action needs to be taken by both levels of government."
The tribunal also found these women were exposed to sexual solicitation and an overall sexually poisoned work environment.
Ramsaroop says fear of reprisal is a "huge factor" in why many migrant workers don't bring forward complaints of discrimination, even right here in Windsor-Essex.
