Officials with the Ontario Nurses Association are worried a plan to only open Leamington's obstetrics unit when needed will jeopardize patient care.
ONA First Vice President Vicki McKenna doesn't feel much thought was put into the way the expert panel's plan will be implemented. "To think that if someone happens to come in, somehow we'll cobble together some staff and pull this all off. It's really not a way to address that urgent need."
Calls by BlackburnNews.com to Leamington District Memorial Hospital officials for comment were not returned.
McKenna says the implementation of an on-call system may require renegotiating the nurses' contract.
The Erie St. Clair LHIN board approved the expert panel's recommendation last week, however, no plan for how it would be implemented was released.
