Ontario Enhancing Auto Strategy

Ontario's minister charged with growing the province's economy says enhancements to the Liberal auto strategy are in the works.

Reacting to last week's provincial budget, Unifor Local 200 President Chris Taylor told BlackburnNews.com he was encouraged by comments from Economic Development, Employment and Infrastructure Minister Brad Duguid. "The provincial Liberals are on board with an auto strategy and are willing to sit down and try to put one in place."

Duguid says Ontario has a strategy to attract new investment but "we want to do more." He says an initiative is in the works that will "put in place a structure where we have an auto champion that has private sector experience."

Duguid is tight-lipped about when the Liberal government will make the announcement saying, "I've got to leave some announcements to myself."

Ontario has five assembly plants, more than any other subnational jurisdiction, and Duguid hinted greater expansion is in the pipeline. He hinted there is potential investment from companies in China. "We want to make sure we're getting out ahead of these opportunities."
