Habitat For Humanity will get a discount on properties thanks to Chatham-Kent Council.
Councillors have asked staff to identify properties that come up for tax sales, that could be used for low-income housing instead.
Councillor Jeff Wesley says this procedure has already come up in Wallaceburg. "There was a lot that had gone through the process and nobody expressed any interest. Habitat For Humanity put an $8,500 bid on it, and we made it available to them for the municipal price which was $500."
Wesley adds these projects will generate tax revenues and beautify the community, which would otherwise sit as vacant land. He says Habitat For Humanity often struggles finding spots to build on, and raising money to finance projects.
