Chatham-Kent's robotics team is back from the world championships in St. Louis, Missouri.
James Thompson, 18, is a member of the CK Cyber Pack. The Grade 12 student at CKSS says the event was bigger than he ever could have imagined. "There were about 40,000 people there from around the world, and about 600 different robotics teams in attendance," says Thompson. "We were in the Edwards Jones Dome in St. Louis and it was fantastic, it was such a large place, and it was a great experience overall."
While it was the first time to the world's for the rookie team, Thompson says there were teams at the event who have qualified for 20 years, and seeing their designs was a learning experience.
Representatives from the U.S. Air Force, NASA, and private space company's were among groups that were represented at the event and gave presentations. Thompson says it felt as if the company's were even scouting some of the top competitors to potentially recruit them in the future.
The 30 members of the CK Cyber Pack team were able to raise the necessary $15,000 to spend five days in St.Louis thanks in large part to donations from St. Clair College and UCC. The team is made up of students from area high school's and local mentors.
