Health Alliance Highlights Lab (Gallery)

Chatham-Kent Health Alliance is showing off its normally off limits medical lab as part of National Medical Labratory Week.

Laboratory Assistant April Currie says each test sample is handled according to strict protocol.

"The number of tests annually done in a hospital laboratory of this size is roughly 2-million and within those tests there are a lot of different constituents and a lot of different pieces of the test," she says. "Specialization would come from pathologists or would come from physicians that isn't common."

Currie says tissue and fluid samples are treated differently depending on what doctors are trying to find out, and in many cases, the final test sample is preserved for ten years in case it is needed for future reference.
