The Chatham-Kent Health Alliance is seeing a large decrease in hospital garbage compared to last year.
During the hospital's annual waste audit this year, organizers ordered a 20 yard dumpster, compared to a 40 yard bin in 2014.
Environmental Engineer Taylor Purdy says the audit is mandated by the province. "If a hospital has over 100 beds, it has to do a waste audit annually. They collect a 24-hour sample of every garbage bag they generate. They put it in a separate dumpster and we sort through it."
In late 2014, CKHA became the first hospital in Canada to get 3R Certification from the Recycling Council of Ontario.
