Poor Communication Hampers New Bins

Ward 1 Councillor Mark Authier says it's been a frustrating week dealing with questions and complaints on new garbage bins unexpectedly rolled out to people's homes in Tilbury.

The bins are part of a new initiative from Progressive Waste Solutions, which has a seven-year garbage and recycling service contract with the municipality.

Authier recognizes residents should have been given more notice about the program.

"It was supposed to be about a month from now and there was supposed to be a media release as well explaining exactly what was going on and it just didn't happen at first," says Authier. "I'm sure a lot of the phone calls and emails that I received wouldn't have happened if they did a media release."

Authier says the response to residents by the company wasn't appropriate as his constituents complained of being told the bins were mandatory, which is not the case. He adds the outreach by PWS was less than stellar.

"They came out with flyers in the garabge tote, but I'm afraid the garbage totes, some of the seniors and shorter people couldn't even get close to getting the letter because they're at the bottom of a 95 gallon tote," says Authier.

The municipality issued a release on late Friday afternoon regarding the new bins being rolled out in Wallaceburg for March 23.

Residents can use the bins for a 45-day trial period before deciding on buying the bin for $75 or returning it free of charge. Call PWS at 519-360-9435 x0 with any questions.
