Donation Box Fraud Hurts Charities

A Chatham-Kent councillor is worried local charities are taking a hit with predatory donation bins popping up in the municipality.

These boxes are owned by for-profit salvage companies that take donations out of CK and sell them elsewhere.

Councillor Michael Bondy plans on bringing up the issue to Chatham-Kent Council tonight and says it's a bad situation for both charities and business owners. "These boxes are coming in and they're being planted on private property without permission. Therefore, they can rest there and make an awful mess, because people pollute them. They put garbage in them and they're not very well maintained."

Bondy hopes a bylaw will be adopted to impose regulations on box operators, and promote better relationships between operators and business owners.
