A local veteran who fought in World War II says he's honoured to have been given the Congressional Gold Medal.
Ralph Mayville, 93, was recently in Washington D.C. for the special ceremony recognizing members of the Devil's Bridgade. "The only thing I was thinking of was all the guys that weren't here, all the buddies I had lost," says Mayville. "To me, they're are the ones that should have had it (the medal) put on their coffins and that's it. They deserve it a hell of a lot more than I do."
Mayville says this medal is for his "buddies" on the brigade made up of allied Canadian and American soldiers."It represents all the guys who are here today and those who are not here," says Mayville. "They should have all got one, as far as I'm concerned."
Mayville was a sniper and started serving his country at the age of 17.
