With plenty of snow on the ground, police are reminding snowmobilers they must follow the rules of the road.
Chatham-Kent Police Service Constable Renee Cowell says snowmobilers require permission from land owners to go on private property. "Riding across fields or front lawns of homes where you do not have permission is trespassing and you may be charged," says Cowell. "In these circumstances, you should also be mindful that your snowmobile may be damaging the crops or lawn." Unless you're riding a snowmobile on your own property, Cowell says all drivers and passengers must be wearing a helmet.
Cowell adds that driving a snowmobile on a sidewalk is prohibited and may be considered careless driving or dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, depending on the circumstance.
Speed limits in the city are 20 km/h, and anywhere where limits are 50 km/h or more the speed limit is 50 km/h for snowmobilers. Speeding fines are $105.
