Decommissioning Of Windsor Jail

The former Windsor jail will be handed over to Infrastructure Ontario in the next few months to find a new use for the facility.

The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services is currently completing the decommissioning process which includes removing locks and any mechanism or furniture that can be used in other facilities throughout the province.

Assistant Deputy Minister Steven Small says the facility is a heritage designated site so that will dictate what can be done with the facility. "There are a number of purposes for old jails, for example, the Colbourg jail in Eastern Ontario is now a bed and breakfast. Other facilities have been used for storage, for archives, for administration with the county or the city. So there's a variety of uses."

The facility first needs to be offered to the city and the county before any public sale is considered.
