Province withdraws housing proposal after hearing concerns from farmers

Ontario has withdrawn a housing proposal that farmers argued would have had devastating consequences for farmland and livestock operations.

The proposal, put forward by Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Steve Clark, aimed to allow more housing development in rural areas.

However, farmers raised concerns about a provision that would permit up to three new lots on farmland, citing potential negative impacts on livestock farming, fragmentation of agricultural land, and inflated farmland prices.

In response to the collective opposition from over a dozen agricultural groups, including the National Farmers Union - Ontario and the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, Clark announced in a letter that the government will not proceed with the lot severance proposal.

Clark acknowledged the farmers' concerns and extended the public comment period for other regulations, demonstrating a willingness to explore alternative approaches to support multigenerational farm families.
