NDP bill pushes for national soil health strategy

The Federal New Democratic Party has introduced a Private Member's Bill that pushes for a national soil health strategy for Canada.

Member of Parliament and NDP Agriculture Critic Alistair MacGregor says the bill also fights food insecurity, and supports farmers.

In a statement, MacGregor said, "Healthy soils are the foundation of sustainable food production, enhanced biodiversity and cleaner air and water for present, and future generations".

The bill would create the office of the National Soil Health Advocate, and a "National Soil Conservation Week" to run in the third week of April each year.

Bill C-290 "An Act Respecting Soil Conservation and Soil Health", was first read in the House of Commons on April 26th.
