GFO launches campaign

Grain Farmers of Ontario is turning up the volume and calling on the Prime Minister to protect Canada's food supply chain from pandemic issues and increased U.S. competition.

Beyond the problems the pandemic has caused, the GFO says the issue of U.S. subsidies still hasn't been addressed.

Chair Markus Haerle says the Canadian government is standing by watching farms struggle while the U.S. pours at least $36 billion into subsidies for farmers.

Haerle adds they are not asking for handouts but for risk management programs to be restored after being defunded by the former Stephen Harper government. In 2012, the federal/provincial AgriStability program was cut and the GFO is asking it be restored to 85 percent.

The Grain farmers of Ontario has now started a campaign to raise awareness that Canada's food supply needs the attention of the Canadian government.

The ad will run on radio on digital platforms and can be viewed at www.grainfarmers.ca.
