West Grey chickens

West Grey is going to pursue a one-year test period for urban chickens.

There are several steps required before residents can participate in the pilot program. The municipality must amend its Zoning Bylaw which currently prohibits livestock in urban areas.

As part of the by-law process, council will need to determine several factors such as set-back distances for coops, fencing requirements, quantity of hens, if a registry and license program is required, and whether or not to allow keeping roosters.

"Council has discussed and considered all sides of this matter and reached a workable compromise," said Mayor Christine Robinson. "I am pleased that a pilot program will be launched once the appropriate legislation has been approved."

The one-year pilot will begin after the appropriate by-laws have been adopted.
