Countries around the globe will mark World Soil Day on December 5th.
The Water and Soils Resource Coordinator for the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority says roughly 95 per cent of our food comes from the soil so we have to look after that soil to continue feeding a growing population.
Ross Wilson also points out the distribution of topsoil around the world is not equal and in our part of the world healthy soil is not something that should be taken for granted.
"Here, the soils grew out of the forests. The forests was the natural vegetation. And the forests tend to make soils that are only six to eight inches deep. Contrast that with soils that are grown up under a grass land. Those can be very deep ... more than two to three feet even."
The United Nations declared December 5th World Soil Day for the first time in 2014.
