European Trade And Animal Health

Canadian agriculture officials are in Rome today where the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food will talk at the United Nations' World Food Day ceremonies.

The trade mission started last week to see see that Canadian farmers are represented abroad while creating more opportunities for the middle-class within the agriculture and agri-food sector.

In some earlier stops, the minister and his G7 counterparts endorsed a communiqué following two days of sessions, where they discussed issues ranging from agricultural risk management practices to food security and migration.

Minister MacAulay also met with European industry associations, including European Livestock and Meat Trades Union, COCERAL and Fediol, before touring the Port of Antwerp, a major hub for Europe-bound agriculture goods from Canada.

And the Government of Canada has announced up to $1.3 million to the Canadian Animal Health Coalition for four projects.

More than $800,000 will be used to develop an emergency management plan for the Canadian livestock industry in major hazard emergencies.

Up to $224,000 will be used to develop a new livestock transport on-line certification program for truckers, shippers and receivers for training to improve handling practices.

Other projects will update the Transportation Codes of Practice for the care and handling of farm animals during transport, and revise the Chicken Farmers of Canada's animal care assessment program.
