New Beef Research Facility Coming To Elora

Ground has been broken at the site of the new Livestock Research and Innovation Centre - Beef Facility in Elora.

Minister of Agriculture, Food & Rural Affairs Minister Jeff Leal made the announcement in partnership with the University of Guelph as well as the Beef Farmers of Ontario. The new centre will allow researchers to develop new methods for more efficient beef production.

The Ontario government is investing $12.4M to help build the facility.

Wellington-Halton Hills MPP Ted Arnott attended the event and says BFO deserves a pat on the back for making this deal fall into place, saying they've made a big financial investment in the project.

University of Guelph Vice President Malcolm Campbell says the new facility will be the hub for world-class bovine research in Ontario.

The building will compliment the new Dairy Research Centre, which was built at the Elora Research Station in 2015.

Construction of the new beef centre, which will be located adjacent to the dairy facility, will begin in the fall of 2017, with completion scheduled for early 2019.

The Ontario government says new beef research infrastructure is a major component of their plan to modernize Ontario's agri-food research capacity across several sectors, including beef, swine, poultry & field crops.

Youth volunteers practice coastal conservation

Nine young volunteers aged 11 to 17 spent three days exploring and protecting the Lake Huron coastline during the Coastal Conservation Youth Corps' inaugural program in Grand Bend from July 21 to 23.
