Turkey producers have a chance to attend a Turkey Academy in Ingersoll in June.
Talks will be geared specifically to turkey including one called 'Is a Turkey a Chicken?' It will be led by Dr. Karen Lardner from the University of Saskatchewan who has been leading turkey focused research.
Nathan Pelissero is Turkey Business Manager at New Life Mills that is organizing the day.
"She's done a lot of research and a lot of practical trials for commercial settings with turkeys," said Pellisero. "In particular she will be talking about lighting with turkeys."
Other talks with speakers will include factors that contribute to quality poultry starts and evolution of feeding programs.
Beyond that, Pelissero says there are some challenges for the industry, sales and consumption.
"Consumption for turkey overall has been fairly flat over the years versus chicken and eggs," said Pelissero. "Then as well with having production with anit-biotics whether you're growing flocks with no anti-biotics in them or with a reduced amount of anit-biotics."
The Turkey Academy is June 1st in Ingersoll and the registration deadline is May 25th.
