Walkerton Meeting To Focus On Water Stewardship

A Bluewater farmer says he believes a meeting scheduled for May 4th at the Walkerton Clean Water Centre in co-operation with the Grey-Bruce Health Unit and the Ministry of Environment is a great idea.

But Joe Vermunt says he has some serious concerns about the fact it's scheduled for what would usually be the height of the planting season for corn growers.

Participants will learn how government agencies and other organizations are working together to address inland water quality challenges. Also, find out how individuals can contribute to water quality stewardship.

Vermunt says that is something that most farmers would be interested in attending, but if the weather co-operates it will also coincide with the height of the corn-planting season.

Vermunt acknowledges the schedule of the people who organize these meetings does not depend on the weather but suggests if they're planning something for the farm community they should be aware of the planting and harvest seasons and be able to avoid those two times of the year.

The session is Thursday, May 4, at the Walkerton Clean Water Centre, 20 Ontario Rd, Walkerton.

Doors open at 5:45 p.m. Tours of the Centre will also be available.
