NFU-O Concerned With Surge In Livestock Rabies Cases

The National Farmers Union-Ontario has addressed a letter to provincial Minister of Agriculture Jeff Leal, and the Minister of Natural Resources Kathryn McGarry with its concern about the recent amount of rabies cases in Huron and Perth County livestock.

The group wants to know what steps the province is taking to reduce the number of incidents.

NFU-Ontario board member Martin Boettcher feels one infected animal is too many.

He says farmers need to work closely with their livestock, so it's only a matter of time until one of them contracts the disease.

The organization is also calling for an investigative report on what's causing the outbreak, including whether or not budget cuts have affected wild animal baiting programs, and finding out if rabies are being imported by livestock from other areas.
