Ag Minister Returns From Asian Trade Mission

Canada's Minister of Agriculture has wrapped up his trade mission to Vietnam and India.

The goal of the journey was to strengthen bilateral ties and market access for Canadian food and agri-food businesses with what the government feels is a priority market.

While in Vietnam, Lawrence MacAulay discussed business opportunities with his counterparts and participated in events which showcased Canadian ag products.

In India, he met with other trade ministers and secured several Memoranda of Understanding between canola oil distributors from Canada and retailers based in India.

Industry representatives suggest they generated 400 leads and expect and additional $3.5 million in sales to India next year.

Minister MacAulay says Canada is committed to expanding trade opportunities in Asia and across the globe.

He notes Vietnam and India have seen strong economic growth in recent years, and the expanding middle class in both countries presents opportunities for Canada's agri-food producers.

Economic annual growth in both countries recently has been between six and seven per cent.
