This week is Canadian Ag Safety Week.
While farm fatalities are on the decline over the last two decades, there's still many that are considered preventable.
Dean Anderson, Strategic Advisor for Workplace Safety and Prevention Services, says tractor-related deaths still top the list.
"Rollovers are still the major killer in the province. Tractors and things involved with tractors are. Rollovers, runovers, and getting entangled make up about 70 per cent of our fatalities," says Anderson.
"Rollovers are still very critical. People think they're not with bigger equipment, but if they go into a ditch, they roll."
Anderson adds small and utility tractors often roll as well as they're improperly loaded with large bales and other oversized materials.
He also feels farmers should also try to avoid working alone.
He says if someone has an accident and no one knows about it, they've typically got an hour or less before shock and blood loss start to take effect.
Anderson recommends farms with multiple workers have at least one that has first aid.
That way, an injured worker can at least be stabilized while the wait for help which typically takes longer to arrive in rural areas.
