Agriculture and Agri-food Canada reports hog prices to end February were up between 7 and 12 per cent around the country from a year ago.
Ontario prices were a full 10 per cent higher.
However, for the first time this year, hog prices did decline over the last week.
Scott Brown of the University of Missouri notes U.S. hog prices took a dip of about 3 dollars.
He says demand for American hogs is still increasing, but it's definitely slowed down from the growth seen over the last two years.
AAFC points out US hog slaughter is down 0.7 per cent so far this year, while pork production is 0.9 per cent behind last year's pace.
Total production here is down by 1.6 per cent from 2016, yet hog processing numbers are up slightly.
The agency reports Ontario, Manitoba and Alberta hog slaughters are so far higher than last year.
Ontario volumes are almost 5 per cent ahead of last year's, by about 40,000 head.
