American pork belly stocks for January have some worried about a possible bacon shortage.
The Ohio Pork Council raised eyebrows when it recently registered the website www.baconshortage.com.
The USDA reported stocks in January at 14 million pounds.
That was not only a record low for the month, it was also down from December's record low by 4 million pounds.
The department isn't worried about a shortage however, as 2017 commercial production is still estimated to be nearly 5 per cent higher than last year's.
Bacon prices for January, according the USDA, were up 8 cents from December to $5.18 a pound, but were also still 47 cents less than a year ago.
