Grey County Farmer Wins Mapleseed Pasture Award

A beef farmer from Dundalk is the 2017 Mapleseed Pasture Award winner.

Paul DeJong of Ventry Hill Farm was presented with the award on Wednesday at the Beef Farmers of Ontario annual general meeting.

DeJong took home a $500 cash prize and a Mapleseed bag of forage seed for his environmental improvements and exceptional pasture management.

The Grey County producer notes pasture is his main source of feed due to the high water table in his area.

He says he tries to pasture at least for at least six months of the year by extending his season with a fall rye cover crop.

DeJong prevents trampling by having fresh water delivered to each of his paddocks via a newly installed pipeline.

Additional sponsor of the award, the Ontario Forage Council, also says Ventry Hill Farm is a great example of how producers can maximize every acre.
