A food scientist at the University of Guelph has been awarded $2 million by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
Gisele LaPointe is working to make dairy products more sustainable by controlling microbes.
LaPointe receives the prestigious federal research chair for Dairy Microbiology, which recognizes researchers who are international leaders in their work.
The University notes the chair will be spread out over five years, with $1 million dollars coming from the NSERC, and the rest coming from the Dairy Farmers of Ontario.
LaPointe says the goal of her research team is to increase efficiency to add value to dairy processes.
She'll also continue to study the interactions in microbial ecosystems during production and processing.
The former Food Science and Nutrition Department director at Laval University joined U of G in 2015 as the Dairy Farmers of Ontario Professor in Dairy Microbiology.
