Argentina Follows Up Record Corn Crop With More Planted Acres

A year after producing record amounts of corn, Argentine growers appear to be upping the ante in 2017.

The United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organization notes the planting season there ended a few weeks ago.

It points out that, while progress was hampered by early January flooding, the amount of corn planted is up 5 per cent on last year's record, at 7.25 million hectares (17.9 million acres).

The FAO says the increased acreage supports a strong export demand after the recent sharp devaluation of Argentina's dollar.

Corn exports are expected to increase by 3.5 per cent in 2017 as a result of last season's bumper harvest and competitive U.S. prices.

The organization also notes that corn prices in Argentina for January were up for the sixth consecutive month.

In fact, they're up more than 60 per cent from a year ago.
