The President of the National Farmers Union feels Prime Minister Trudeau will need to use the utmost diplomacy when talking NAFTA with the new U.S. administration.
In a recent Op Ed, Jan Slomp says President Trump will likely try to find reasons to reject Canadian products from coming into the country.
He notes the last thing Canada needs is to provide giveaways to the U.S. in an attempt to persuade our southern neighbours to not back out of the deal.
Slomp also says that NAFTA isn't the golden egg it's promoters wanted it to be.
He questions how free trade facilitates efficiency, yet the spread between farm gate prices and those seen at the grocery store keeps getting larger.
The NFU leader concludes his letter by saying if Trudeau wants to prevent the election of a Trump-like leader here in three years, he'll have to start better addressing the needs of rural Canadians.
