The USDA's National Agricultural Statistics service reports all pork inventory in America on December 1st was up 4 per cent from the same time last year.
The 71.5 million head were up slightly on September's total.
The department notes market hog inventory was at 65 and a half million, also up four points on the year.
Breeding inventory was reported to be up one per cent for the year and the quarter, at 6.1 million.
The service also points out the number of sows farrowing in the recent quarter was a little more than 3 million, an increase of four per cent from 2015.
It anticipates the number will be similar in the upcoming quarter, which would equal a one per cent gain on what it was at the start of this year and 3 points more than in 2015.
The USDA also says the average pigs saved per litter hit a record high last quarter, reaching 10.63.
