Earlier this year, the Canadian Federation of Agriculture presented the House of Commons human resources committee with a recommendation to remove the cumulative duration limit on foreign workers.
The CFA says it's pleased that the "four-in, four-out" rule will no longer apply to temporary foreign workers.
The federation feels the change should help reduce the hardship put on farmers of finding workers to fill their labour requirements.
President Ron Bonnett says the CFA is eager to work with the federal government and members of the industry to create meaningful changes in the Temporary Foreign Worker Program to benefit farmers.
The rule changes will make it easier for foreign farm workers to stay permanently, reducing training and turnover for farm businesses.
The CFA estimates ag labour shortages cost the industry $1.5 billion in lost sales every year.
