Maple Leaf Foods Opens Food Security Centre

Maple Leaf Foods is making a big investment towards the issue of food insecurity.

The company says it plans to invest $10 million over the next five years into launching the Maple Leaf Centre for Action on Food Security.

President and CEO Michael McCain says the centre is the culmination of years of talks with stakeholders to decide where the company should direct its resources to make the biggest difference in the lives of Canadians.

He adds it's a shame that a country with so much wealth has one in six children, and a total of four million citizens, facing food insecurity.

McCain, who has been named Honourary Chairman of the Centre, is also making a personal pledge of $2.5 million towards an endowment to further press the social matter.

Maple Leaf says more than 60 per cent of Canadians are unaware of the issue.

The centre has already launched a social media awareness campaign called "4,000,000 Canadians".
